Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – Stockton University (5-6) scored the first nine points of the game and never relinquished the lead as the Ospreys downed Wilkes University (6-5) 59-49. The win snapped a four-game skid for Stockton.
Hailee Porricelli (Howell/Freehold Twp.) scored a team-high 13 points followed by
Kiley Gelston (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) with 10 markers.
Lajerah Wright (Atlantic City/Atlantic City) netted eight points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Armanee DeBarry (Millville/Millville) scored two early baskets to help Stockton break out to a 9-0 lead in the opening 2:17. Porricelli sank a layup late in the quarter to stretch the lead to 17-6 before a Wilkes basket made it 17-8 after one period.
The Ospreys boosted the lead to 14 points at 27-13 in the second stanza. The Colonels answered with a 12-2 run the rest of the period to close within 29-25 at the half. Wright led the Ospreys with seven first-half points and seven rebounds, followed by
Emily Donzanti (Toms River/TR South) with six points.
Stockton scored the first seven markers of the third quarter, four by Gelston, to reestablish a double-digit cushion at 36-25. Wilkes later netted the last five points of the period to slice the gap to three at 42-39. Porricelli opened the fourth quarter with consecutive three-pointers for a 48-39 lead and the Ospreys held off Wilkes from there.
The Colonels got as close as 49-47 with 2:56 to play but
Chyna Wooten (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Academy) hit a free throw and Gelston followed with four straight points to end the threat. Stockton went 7-8 at the line in the last 1:32 to seal the 59-49 triumph.
The Ospreys will travel to Kean University for an NJAC game on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
