Galloway, N.J. – The Stockton University women's basketball team will host a Think Pink game for its NJAC matchup against Rutgers-Newark tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. The Think Pink initiative aims to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
"I'm so glad we can honor and bring awareness to those who battled and lost their lives to breast cancer," said head coach
Devin Jefferson. "The Think Pink game started with legendary coach and pioneer of women's basketball Kay Yow, who lost her life to breast cancer in 2009."
"I'm glad to pay homage to her as well as my teammate from Seton Hall, Simona Burgess, who battled the disease for years and unfortunately passed away in September 2019. We want to bring light, love and awareness to all of those who have struggled. I pray more people are able to overcome their battle," Jefferson added.
The Ospreys will wear pink t-shirts during warmups prior to tomorrow night's game to call attention to the fight against breast cancer and salute all women who have battled or are battling the disease. The contest is the season finale for Stockton, who will be seeking their 10th win of the year.
NCAA women's college basketball has long supported breast cancer awareness. In addition to Think Pink events, many schools are participating in
Play4Kay games between February 14-24 to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Yow coached for 38 years at the Division I level, winning over 700 games before passing away due to breast cancer in 2009.
According to
Breastcancer.org, in 2020 an estimated 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 48,530 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
