Stockton Opens Season with Sweep; 5-2, 9-4

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-0) opened the 2020 season with a doubleheader sweep of Penn College (0-2) by scores of 5-2 and 9-4 on Saturday afternoon. Evan Geisler (Lodi/Lodi) led the Ospreys with four hits on the day, giving first year head coach Rich Gawlak his first two career wins at Stockton.

The Ospreys got the scoring started in game one on a Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) RBI single for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Earlier in the frame, Swift made a highlight reel stop at shortstop, to throw out a potential baserunner for the Wildcats.

Penn College took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for a 2-1 margin, before Stockton put the game away. In their half of the frame, Ryan O'Sullivan (Lacey Twp./Lacey Twp.) walked, stole second and eventually scored on a Marco Meleo (Freehold/Freehold Boro) RBI.

After a sacrifice, John Perrino (Wall/Wall) scored Meleo. Geisler, plated Perrino then Mike DeSenzo (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) scored Geisler for the 5-2 advantage.

James Wynne (Howell/Howell) tossed the final 2.2 innings in relief, without allowing a hit, in recording his first career win at Stockton and capturing the 5-2 victory.

The nightcap was all Stockton, as the Ospreys tallied three runs in their half of the second inning. Geisler and Perrino singled and scored on RBI by DeSenzo and Ryan Mihlebach (Clarksboro/GCIT). An error plated the last run for the 3-0 lead after two frames.

The Wildcats knotted the contest with a trio of runs in the top of the third inning, before Stockton tallied six unanswered runs. Three of the markers came in the bottom of the fourth stanza, two on RBI by Brandan Gomez (Jersey City/Ferris) and Meleo.

Three more scores in the next inning put the game away. Geisler scored an unearned run and RBI by Gomez and O'Sullivan gave Stockton a commanding 9-3 margin. Penn College tallied one more time to close the game to 9-4 in the top of the sixth inning.

Freshman Brandon Drapeau (Sparta/Sparta) then struck out the side in the final frame, to close out the game and the 9-4 win. Will Kramer (Marlboro/Marlboro) earned his first win at Stockton with five innings of work, fanning four and walking one.

In addition to Geisler, DeSenzo filled the stat sheet with three hits, scoring three times and pilfering five bases. Perrino added three hits to the 19 safeties on the day for the Ospreys.

Stockton will have a week off before facing Utica in a doubleheader next Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 am.
