Stockton’s Upset Bid Foiled by #6 Ursinus, 14-13

Collegeville, Pa. – Stockton University (5-1) led by six goals late in the third quarter but fell victim to a furious rally by #6 Ursinus College (7-0) that foiled the Ospreys' upset bid 14-13. The Bears netted the deciding goal with just 2:10 remaining to snap a 13-13 tie.

Erik Anderson (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) reached a pair of milestones by recording his 200th career point and 100th career goal, both in the second quarter. Anderson finished with three goals and three assists for a game-high six points. Eric Ellis (Voorhees/Eastern) tossed in three goals for the Ospreys.

The game was a matchup of unbeaten teams, with Ursinus ranked sixth in the nation by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and Stockton hovering just outside the top 20 at fourth in the Also Receiving Votes category. The Ospreys built their lead with efficiency on offense, scoring 12 goals on 26 shots through three quarters.

Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph) opened the scoring but Ursinus responded with two tallies 42 seconds apart for a 2-1 edge. Ellis knotted the game 2-2 and the teams were tied after one period. Eric D'Arminio (Roxbury/Roxbury) put the Ospreys on top 3-2 just 54 seconds into the second quarter.

Anderson assisted on D'Arminio's goal, becoming the fifth Stockton player in program history to reach the 200-point mark. He followed with his 99th career goal and Ellis added the fourth straight goal by the Ospreys for a 5-2 lead.

After the Bears got one back, Anderson netted career goal number 100. The senior then assisted on a counter by Dante Poli (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks South) for a 7-3 advantage. Although Ursinus responded just six seconds later, Stockton led 7-4 at the half.

The Ospreys kept the momentum with a three-goal run early in the third quarter. Peter Burke (Shamong/Seneca), Patrick Dunleavy (Medford/Bishop Eustace) and Ellis found the net for a 10-4 lead. After Ursinus scored two straight, J.J. McKenna (Barnegat/Barnegat) and Anderson potted goals to put Stockton in front 12-6 with 1:03 left in the third quarter.

The Ursinus comeback began with a marker with 15 seconds left in the third stanza and another one 10 seconds into the fourth period. The Bears continued the run of six consecutive goals by scoring four times in just over four minutes to pull into a 12-12 tie with 9:23 on the clock.

Stockton briefly stemmed the tide as Burke scored with 7:15 to play to put the Ospreys back in front 13-12. Ursinus tied the game again 47 seconds later and pulled ahead with 2:10 remaining, the first time Stockton had trailed since the 6:01 mark of the first quarter.

The Ospreys registered three shots in the final minute, including one by Poli that rang off the post with just 14 seconds left, but they were unable to convert and their upset bid fell just short, 14-13.

Freshman goalkeeper Eric Lindskog (Montville/Montville) made his first career start and finished with 12 saves on the night. Matt Honchalk (Monrovia, Md./Linganore) contributed five ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers for the Ospreys.

Stockton returns home to host Oneonta on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first of five straight home games for the Ospreys.
