Hoboken, N.J. – After opening the season with five straight wins at home, Stockton University (5-1) played its first road game and suffered its first setback, 8-1 at Stevens (4-5). Three Osprey pitchers held the Ducks to seven hits, but a four-run fifth inning broke the game open.
Marco Meleo (Freehold/Freehold Boro) went 2-4 with a double and a triple for two of Stockton's five hits on offense. Meleo also stole a base in the game.
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) went 1-3 and scored Stockton's lone run. Meleo, Perrino and
Evan Geisler (Lodi/Lodi) each extended hitting streaks to six games, stroking at least one hit in every contest thus far.
After three scoreless innings, the Ospreys got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth. Perrino led off with a single and went to third base as Geisler followed with a single.
Jay Marchese (East Brunswick/East Brunswick) then earned an RBI on a grounder to short that scored Perrino for a 1-0 edge.
Stevens tied the game in the bottom half and then scored four runs in the fifth frame on just one hit plus two walks, two hit by pitches and an error for a 5-1 count. The Ducks tacked on a run in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth for the 8-1 final.
James Wynne (Howell/Howell) came out of the bullpen with Stockton trailing 5-1 and limited the Ducks to one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of relief, but the Ospreys were unable to rally. Starter
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) went the first 4.1 innings and absorbed the loss.
Stockton is scheduled for a busy stretch of seven games in five days, starting with a contest against Castleton University (Vt.) on Friday at 2:30 p.m. that is the first of a three-game set between the Ospreys and Spartans.
