Stockton Stays Unbeaten in NJAC With 2-0 Win

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-4-1, 3-0-0) remained unbeaten in NJAC play with a tight 2-0 victory over Kean (6-3-1, 2-2-0 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. Ervin Gjeli (Hasbrouck Heights/Hasbrouck Heights) and Sean O'Leary (Bordentown/Bordentown) tallied the markers for the Ospreys.

The Cougars pressured the Ospreys from the opening kickoff, but it was Stockton who came away with the first marker. At 7:19, after a foul in the box, Gjeli converted the penalty kick for his sixth goal of the year and a 1-0 lead. Gjeli has scored four of his tallies on penalty kicks this season. Kean outshot Stockton 7-3 in the first half, but the Ospreys came away with the only goal.

Kean continued to keep the Ospreys on their heels in the final stanza and had their best opportunity in the 72nd minute. Felix Pereyra fired a low shot to the left side. Goalkeeper Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) got just enough of the shot to deflect it off the left post, to keep Stockton ahead by the lone goal.

O'Leary tallied the insurance marker at 86:10 on the hustle by Dante Montesinos (West Long Branch/Shore Regional) and pass by Michael Echeverria (Linden/St. Joseph). Montesinos kept the ball in play down the near sideline, where he fed Echeverria in the middle. O'Leary took his pass on the left side and hit the low right corner for his first of the season and the 2-0 lead.

Gromitsaris and the defense made the markers stand up to give Stockton its third straight win and extended their unbeaten streak to six straight matches.

Gromitsaris posted his fourth consecutive shutout and fifth overall this year with an eight save effort. Dominic Ridge kicked out two shots for the Cougars in net.

Stockton's next match will be Wednesday night, when the Ospreys will have a home match against visiting New Jersey City. Game time is set for 7pm.
