Stockton Falls to Montclair State in NJAC Semifinals

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (16-17) saw its bid for a third consecutive NJAC championship come to an end with a 3-0 defeat to Montclair State (20-10) in the conference semifinals. The setback also halted a four-match winning streak by the Ospreys.

Haley Green (Springville, Utah/Maple Mountain) led Stockton with eight kills followed by Charlotte Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Caity Ullmer (Midland Park/Midland Park) with seven apiece. Leon also produced three blocks.

Aubrey Rentzel (York, Pa./Central York) dished 20 assists and tied Grace Brandt (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) for match-high honors with 12 digs apiece. Stockton was hampered by 28 attack errors and a .056 hitting percentage in the match.

Trailing 20-14 in the first set, Stockton used a 9-4 run to get within 24-23 before surrendering set point and falling 25-23. The Ospreys fell behind 12-5 in the second stanza and never recovered as the Red Hawks took control of the match 25-16.

Stockton stayed close throughout the third set and led 13-12 and 15-14 as they tried to stave off elimination from the NJAC Tournament. After four ties in the next seven points, Montclair State used a 6-2 spurt to open a 24-20 lead.

Stockton fended off two match points on a kill by Green and ace by Alice Brandt (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) but could not sustain the momentum and MSU finished off the match 25-22.

The Ospreys went 12-6 in the second half of the season, highlighted by win streaks of five and four matches, and finished with a 16-17 overall record.
