Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (9-1, 5-0 NJAC) built a 23-point lead and fended off a charge by Montclair State (4-5, 1-4 NJAC) for an 89-82 victory that was the fifth straight win for the Ospreys. Stockton shot 9-21 (42.9%) from three-point range in the win.
Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) led the Ospreys with a team-high 18 points. Flanders made his first six shots, including three three-pointers, and finished 6-9 from the floor. He also tied for the team lead with six rebounds.
Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) scored a career-high 16 points and
Jordan Williams (Trenton/Trenton Central) contributed 15 points, shooting 6-8 (75%) from the floor.
Luciano Lubrano (Ocean City/Ocean City) rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers with 14 markers and tied Flanders for the team lead with six rebounds.
Stockton shot a torrid 75 percent (21-28) from the floor in the first half, including 7-11 (63.6%) from beyond the arc. Still, the Ospreys trailed for most of the opening 12 minutes as Montclair State matched Stockton's offense and held a 27-23 edge.
The game quickly turned as Stockton reeled off 23 consecutive points in five minutes for a commanding 46-27 advantage. Flanders led the onslaught with eight markers while Lubrano hit two three-pointers for six. The lead ballooned to 22 at 54-32 before a late Red Hawks' bucket made it 54-35 at the break.
Flanders and Lubrano netted 13 and 12 points respectively in the first half, with Flanders going a perfect 5-5 from the field. Stockton forced 16 turnovers and converted them into 24 points. The Ospreys also held a 28-4 advantage on points in the paint as the Red Hawks fired away from three-point land.
In the second half, a basket by
Alan Glover (Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth Whitemarsh) with 13:31 remaining gave Stockton its biggest lead at 67-44. Montclair State began chipping away at the margin, using a 22-4 run to get within five at 71-66 with 7:27 remaining.
The Red Hawks closed the gap to five three more times, but Stockton answered each one.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) swished a three-pointer with 2:42 left that put the Ospreys ahead 82-74 and proved to be the clincher. Williams followed with a basket that increased the lead back to double figures and Stockton closed out its fifth straight win, 89-82.
Steven Breeman and Irving Callender IV tied for game-high honors with 20 points apiece for Montclair State. Callender also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Devin Cooper tossed in 14 markers and dealt a game-high six assists for the Red Hawks.
Stockton will play one more game before the holiday as the Ospreys travel to Rosemont College for a non-conference game next Saturday, December 18 at 2 p.m.
