Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-2, 2-2 NJAC) evened their record at 2-2 with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden (1-2-1, 1-2-1 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon, for the team's second consecutive shutout.
Dante Montesinos (West Long Branch/Shore Regional) tallied the only score of the afternoon for the Ospreys.
The first half saw the squads battle, as they played evenly through the first 45 minutes of play. Stockton was able to volley four attempts, with three on net, but came away empty.
Michael Echeverria (Linden/St. Joseph's) and
Sean O'Leary (Bordentown/Bordentown) had the best opportunities in the frame, but to no avail and the match remained knotted at 0-0.
The second stanza looked like a repeat of the opening half, until
Ian Byrne (Lanoka Harbor/Lacey Twp.) blasted a shot that was kicked away in the 58th minute. Montesinos then tallied the eventual game winner at 64:45 of the final period.
The senior took a cross from freshman
Connor Smith (Hazlet/Raritan) and deposited his first goal of the season to the lower left corner for the one goal advantage. It was Smith's first career point for Stockton.
From there the Stockton defense held off the Scarlet Raptors, allowing four shots in the second half, but none on net, preserving the 1-0 victory.
Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) earned his second consecutive whitewash and ninth in his career, making just one save in the win. His counterpart Juan Bahena made five saves for the Scarlet Raptors.
Stockton will travel to Jersey City for their next match on Wednesday afternoon. The Ospreys will face New Jersey City University with a 3 pm start time.
