Union, N.J. – Stockton University (2-0) took the field for the first time in 381 days and celebrated its long-awaited return to the diamond by sweeping #14 Kean University (4-3) with a pair of 7-5 victories. The Ospreys scored six runs in the ninth inning of each game to come from behind and win.
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) went 2-4 with a walk, run and an RBI in the opener.
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) walked four times and scored once for the Ospreys.
Trailing 2-0 after five innings, Stockton got on the board in the sixth frame as
Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/Old Bridge) stroked an RBI single. The Ospreys faced the 2-1 deficit into the ninth inning when they exploded for six runs on three hits, three wild pitches and an error.
Ryan Mihlebach (Clarksboro/GCIT) vaulted Stockton into a 3-2 lead with a two-run double. Perrino added an RBI single, and Mihlebach, Perrino and Viani all scored on wild pitches as the Ospreys extended to a 7-2 advantage. In the bottom of the ninth, Kean plated three runs and got the tying run to the plate but Stockton held on for the 7-5 triumph.
James Wynne (Howell/Howell) tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory on the mound. Starter
Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) went the first six innings and held the Cougars to two runs.
Marco Meleo (Freehold/Freehold Twp.) and
Evan Geisler (Lodi/Lodi) each went 3-5 with two RBI and a run in the nightcap. Fabrizzi knocked one hit, walked three times and scored twice.
Kean led 3-0 entering the seventh inning before Stockton broke through for its first run on an RBI single by Meleo that scored Fabrizzi. The Cougars added a run in the eighth frame for a 4-1 count entering Stockton's last chance. Once again, the Ospreys rallied with six runs on three hits.
Meleo started the comeback with an RBI single and Viani earned an RBI on a fielder's choice. Geisler followed with a two-run single that boosted Stockton in front 5-4.
Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) capped the outburst with a two-run single that scored Geisler and Viani for a 7-4 lead.
Kean again threatened in the bottom of the ninth. The Cougars scored once and got the tying run on first base before Swift absorbed a ground ball and stepped on second base for the final out as Stockton completed the sweep 7-5.
After starter
Phil DeMarco (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) allowed three runs and scattered nine in seven innings pitched,
Will Kramer (Marlboro/Marlboro) got the win after tossing one inning out of the bullpen.
Michael Wynne (Howell/Howell) pitched the ninth frame to earn a save.
Stockton will be back on the field tomorrow for a doubleheader at Montclair State. First pitch of the opener is slated for 3 p.m.
