Montclair, NJ – Stockton University (4-6, 2-4 NJAC) split a doubleheader with Montclair State (11-4, 3-3 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 7-3, before falling 9-6 in 10 innings in the second game.
Marco Meleo (Freehold/Freehold Boro) and
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) led the Ospreys with three hits each on the day.
Stockton fell behind 2-1 after four innings in the opener, before exploding for five runs in the top of the fifth frame. Freshman
Matt Storch (South Brunswick/South Brunswick) walked and Meleo advanced him to third on a base knock.
Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) plated Storch on a fielder's choice, then Perrino knocked in Meleo.
Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/Old Bridge) scored Perrino for a 5-2 lead.
Nick Trifiletti (Linwood/Mainland) drove in the final run for a 6-2 advantage.
The Red Hawks answered with a single tally in the bottom of the frame, but the Ospreys added one more in the final inning and completed the 7-3 victory.
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) earned his first win of the season, tossing 7.1 innings, scattering seven hits and inducing 13 ground ball outs.
James Wynne (Howell/Howell) picked up his first career save with a 1.2 inning effort, allowing just one hit.
The Ospreys aimed for the sweep in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Meleo scored on a wild pitch for the first tally, then Fabrizzi singled in a run, setting up Trifiletti.
With the bases loaded, he blasted a double to center that cleared the bases for a 5-0 lead. He then stole third and scored on an error for a 6-0 advantage. Montclair State answered with a three spot to cut the margin in half in their part of the frame.
The home team plated a single run in the sixth, setting up a wild finish. In the bottom of the ninth, the Red Hawks scored two runs with two outs to knot the game at 6-6, sending it to an extra frame.
After Stockton was unable to break the tie, Montclair State put two runners on with one away. Jason Moore then blasted a walk-off three run home run to give the Red Hawks the 9-6 come from behind win and a split of the twinbill.
Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) started and threw the first 5.1 innings, but did not figure in the decision.
Michael Wynne (Howell/Howell) took the loss evening his record at 1-1.
The Ospreys return home for their next tilt, as they will face The College of New Jersey next Thursday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm in Galloway.
