Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-9, 7-7 NJAC) evened their record on the season with a Twinbill sweep over Rutgers-Newark (1-13, 1-13 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon.
The scores were 9-0 and 14-5 with the Ospreys banging out 17 hits in the games.The Ospreys have scored 50 runs in their last four games, including three straight wins
Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/Old Bridge) had a pair of safeties in each game.
Stockton started strong in the opener, plating three runs in the first two innings for a 3-0 margin. The home team scored three more times in the fifth inning on a wild pitch and two sacrifice flies by
Marco Meleo (Freehold Twp./Freehold Boro) and
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) to stretch the advantage to 6-0.
That would be more than enough for
Rico Viani (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) as he tossed the first six innings in earning his second win of the season. Stockton would tack on three single runs in the final five frames to seal the victory.
Trey Fracassini (Midland Park/Midland Park),
James Wynne (Howell/Howell) and
Tyler Apt (Williamstown/Williamstown) tossed an inning each, allowing just two hits and striking out three over the final three innings to finish the combined shutout.
The Scarlet Raiders began game two when they scored the first two runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 early lead. That was short lived as the Ospreys answered with a six spot in the bottom of the inning, sending 11 batters to the plate.
Evan Geisler (Lodi/Lodi) rapped a bases loaded single for one run, then
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) knocked a pair for a 3-2 lead.
Mike Costanzo (Williamstown/Williamstown) was hit by a pitch for another RBI, before
Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) knocked in two more with his first career hit.
The freshman also picked up his first two RBI in his collegiate career and the lead grew to 6-2 after one inning. After Stockton scored another run in the second inning, the
Ospreys again plated six more runs to put the game out of reach in the third inning.
With the bases loaded, Fabrizzi drove in a run with a hit. A failed pickoff at third allowed Meleo to come across for a 9-2 lead, but the home squad was not done. A wild pitch and RBI hits by
Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) and Costanzo pushed the margin to 13-2 after three innings.
Rutgers-Newark scored a pair of runs to offset another run by Stockton to set the final score at 14-5 in favor of the Ospreys. Fabrizzi,
Ryan Mihlebach Clarksboro/GCIT), Swift and Talbot all had two hits in the nightcap, with Talbot finishing with three RBI.
The Ospreys next game will start the last week of the regular season. They will take on Rowan University at home on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
