Stockton Splits Doubleheader at Ramapo

Mahwah, N.J. – Stockton University (6-14, 6-10 NJAC) split a conference doubleheader at Ramapo (5-11, 5-9 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys dropped the first game 5-3 but exploded for 15 hits in the nightcap, winning 14-3 in five innings.

In the opener, Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) went 2-4 with a double, home run, two runs and two RBI. Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) doubled home James in the top of the first for an early 1-0 lead but Ramapo tied the game with a run in the bottom half. The Roadrunners added one run in the third inning, two more in the fourth and one in the sixth for a 5-1 count.

Murzello led off the seventh inning with a double and James followed with a two-run homer to make it 5-3, but the next three batters were retired in order to end the game. Stevie Unger (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) came out of the bullpen with the Ospreys trailing 4-1 and pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts.

Megan Katzmar (Cinnaminson/Holy Cross) led the offense in the nightcap as she went 4-4 with a double, grand slam and seven RBI. The grand slam was the first career home run for the fifth-year senior who came back to play this season after the 2020 slate was wiped out after two games due to COVID.

Murzello was 3-4 with two stolen bases and a run while Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) contributed two hits, three runs and an RBI. Stockton pitcher Samantha McErlane (Mt. Ephraim/Audubon) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Ramapo produced a pair of safeties and three runs.

Stockton notched two runs in the top of the first as Murzello singled and later scored on a wild pitch and Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) doubled home James. In the second frame, Katzmar singled in Ortiz and James knocked an RBI single for a 4-0 lead. A two-run double by Katzmar in the third stanza made it 6-0 Ospreys.

Stockton put the game away with six more runs in the fourth inning. Dunphy scored on a wild pitch and Ortiz earned an RBI with a bases-loaded walk. Katzmar followed with her grand slam for four more RBI and a 12-0 advantage.

Gabrielle Barranger (Sicklerville/Haddonfield) led off the top of the fifth with a pinch-hit single and later scored on a passed ball. Brittany Rifenburg (Spotswood/Spotswood) smacked an RBI double for a 14-0 lead. Ramapo ended McErlane's tries for a no-hitter and shutout in the bottom of the fifth and the game ended as a 14-3 win for Stockton.

Up next, the Ospreys will host Kean University in an NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
