Glassboro, N.J. – Stockton University (0-6, 0-2 NJAC) continued its difficult early-season slate with a doubleheader at Rowan University (8-4, 2-0 NJAC) for the second straight Saturday. The Ospreys fell in both ends, 8-0 (6 innings) and 8-2.
The twinbill at Rowan was a last-minute schedule adjustment. The Ospreys originally were supposed to play at Montclair State, but once those games were postponed, Stockton picked up Rowan as its opponent.
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) and
Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) registered one hit apiece in each game. Murzello has hit safely in four consecutive games for the Ospreys.
In addition to Murzello and Ortiz, who's hit was a double,
Megan Gray (Marlton/Cherokee) also stroked a hit in the opener. Rowan scored twice in the first inning and once in the second for a 3-0 count. The Profs added four runs in the fifth frame, with three coming on a home run by Zoe Frisko. A single run in the bottom of the sixth ended the game at 8-0.
In the nightcap, a pair of the Ospreys, sophomore
Megan McManus (Northfield/Mainland) and freshman
Brittany Rifenburg (Spotswood/Spotswood) each knocked their first career hit.
Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) rapped a double as well.
After Rowan took an early 1-0 edge in the first inning, Stockton pulled ahead 2-1 with a pair in the second frame. McManus singled home Gray, who had reached on a fielder's choice for a 1-1 tie. The Ospreys later executed a double steal, with Murzello taking second base and
Gabrielle Barranger (Sicklerville/Haddonfield) racing home for a 2-1 lead.
Rowan pulled away with three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings before adding one more in the sixth on the way to the 8-2 final score. Murzello reached base twice in the contest, with a hit and a walk.
Stockton will continue its daunting schedule on Tuesday when the Ospreys play their fourth straight road doubleheader, this time at The College of New Jersey starting at 3 p.m.
