Stockton Edged by William Paterson 1-0 in Double Overtime

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (1-4) was eliminated from the NJAC Tournament with a 1-0 setback to William Paterson (2-2) in double overtime. The game was an NJAC semifinal contest between the No. 2 seed Ospreys and No. 3 seed Pioneers.

The teams played an evenly-matched affair, with each squad registering nine shots and Stockton holding a slight 10-9 edge on penalty corners. Freshman goaltender Kylie Mitchell (Shamong/Seneca) made five saves, two in the first half and three in the second OT.

The majority of regulation time was played in the midfield area, with neither team able to generate many quality scoring chances. Stockton earned a penalty stroke with 2:37 left in the second quarter, but the shot by Gianna Morganti (Berlin/St. Joseph's) glanced off the right post.

The Ospreys outshot WPU 4-1 in the second half, but their three shots on goal were turned aside by Pioneers' goalie Emily Hoagland. Meanwhile, the Stockton defense held the visitors without a shot on goal in the half.

Stockton controlled the play in the first overtime, with Morganti firing the only two shots of the period. One try went wide and the other was saved by Hoagland. William Paterson seized the momentum in the second OT.

The Pioneers attempted five shots in the period, with Mitchell stopping the first three. They earned their third penalty corner of the stanza with 54 seconds left and cashed in for the game-winner.

After a shot by Megan Hoopes was blocked by an Osprey defender, Alicia Mitchell pounced on the rebound and floated a high shot that found the net to deal Stockton the 1-0 defeat. The goal came with just 45 seconds left before the game would have gone to a shootout.

Morganti led all players with six shots, including four on goal. Hoagland finished with five saves for William Paterson, matching her counterpart Mitchell's total at the other end.
