Wayne, N.J. – Stockton University (9-13, 7-11 NJAC) finished a stretch of four games against ranked opponents in three days and ended the regular season with a pair of defeats at 23rd-ranked William Paterson (23-6, 14-4). The scores were 15-5 and 10-1.
A pair of freshmen were the top hitters for the Ospreys as
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) paced the team with five hits followed by
Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) with four hits on the day.
Nieves went 3-5 with a double and two RBI while Talbot was 2-4 with a run and an RBI in the opener. An RBI double by Nieves in the top of the first gave the Ospreys a brief 1-0 lead. Talbot earned an RBI with a groundout in the top of the second for a 2-1 edge.
The Pioneers scored twice in the bottom of the second for a 3-2 lead and pulled away by scoring in at least once in innings four through eight for the 15-5 final score.
In the nightcap, Nieves went 2-3 with a run while
Garrett DeMarrais (Oradell/River Dell) was 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Talbot also knocked two hits in the game.
DeMarrais recorded an RBI with a groundout in the top of the second that scored Nieves for a 1-1 tie. William Paterson plated nine unanswered runs the rest of way to deal Stockton the 10-1 defeat in the regular season finale.
Stockton will be the No. 8 seed for NJAC Tournament and host No. 9 New Jersey City in a play-in game on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
