Stockton Sweeps Montclair State to Advance in NJAC Tournament

Montclair, NJ – Stockton University (10-16) seeded sixth, traveled to third seeded Montclair State (13-9) and swept the NJAC quarterfinal doubleheader by scores of 6-3 and 3-1 on Friday afternoon. Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) and Liani Ortiz (Marlton/Cherokee) each had four hits on the day to lead the Ospreys.

The Ospreys opened the first game with a pair of runs in the first and third innings of the contest. James doubled, and freshman Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) walked in the first frame. James scored on an Ortiz single, and Patterson registered the second marker when Vanessa Tancini (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) reached on an error for a quick 2-0 lead.

James and Angie Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) singled in the third frame. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Ortiz drove in both teammates for a 4-0 lead. The Red Hawks sliced the margin in half with single runs in the third and fourth innings, but Stockton salted the game away with single runs in the fifth and sixth stanzas.

Those tallies offset another solo marker by Montclair State to gain the 6-3 victory for Marissa Semeraro (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) who scattered 10 hits for her fifth win of the season in the circle.

The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Stockton plated a trio of runs. Meg Murzello (Maple Shade/Holy Cross) reached on a bunt, then James singled putting two runners on. Dunphy reached on a fielder's choice and Murzello scored on an ensuing error. Patterson scored Dunphy and James for a 3-0 advantage.

The Red Hawks got one back in the top of the sixth, spoiling a Samantha McErlane (Mount Ephraim/Audubon) attempt at a shutout. But McErlane shut the door for her third win of the season to secure the 3-1 victory.

Dunphy and Patterson added three hits on the day with Ortiz driving in three runs and Patterson two.

Stockton will travel to Ewing to face The College of New Jersey, who is the number two seed, in the NJAC semi-finals. The series will be best of three with a doubleheader Tuesday. Game times are 2 pm and 5 pm. If necessary, the third game will be Wednesday at TCNJ at 4pm.
