Stockton Wins NJAC Opener 4-0

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (5-4-1, 1-0-0) opened play in the NJAC with a convincing 4-0 shutout over Ramapo College (4-4-0, 0-2-0 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. Four different Ospreys hit the net on the afternoon in the tightly contested match.

Brendan Deal (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) and freshman Joseph Carbone (Pequannock/Pequannock) topped the team with three shots apiece and each scored a goal.

The Ospreys got on the board first when Ervin Gjeli (Hasbrouck Heights/Hasbrouck Heights) converted a penalty kick for his fifth of the year and a 1-0 lead. Stockton outshot the Roadrunners 7-1 during the first half with four quality opportunities. Ramapo goalkeeper Joshua Schaffer kept the visitors in the contest with some outstanding saves.

In the final stanza, Stockton opened up the offense with three tallies. At 52:36, Sebi Morrello (North Caldwell/West Essex) took a long pass from Peter Kozlej (Toms River/Toms River East), got behind the defense and deposited his second goal of the season for a 2-0 advantage. The helper was Kozlej's first point as an Osprey.

In the 79th minute, Deal took a pass from Ian Byrne (Lanoka Harbor/Lacey Twp.) and his left-footed blast found the net for the 3-0 margin. Just 1:48 later, Carbone tallied his fifth goal of the year, potting his own rebound. The rookie gathered a pass from Antonio Matos (Hammonton/St. Augustine Prep) and fired a shot that was kicked away. Carbone found the rebound and made it 4-0 to set the final score.

Dino Gromitsaris (Bordentown/Bordentown) posted his third straight shutout and 13th of his career with a four-save effort, that included two in the 72nd minute to keep Ramapo off the board. Schaffer made six saves in net for the Roadrunners.

Stockton's next match will be Wednesday night, when the Ospreys travel to Camden to face Rutgers-Camden. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
