Ashland, Va. – #23 Stockton University (9-1) prevailed over #20 Mary Washington (8-2) 80-66 in a showdown between ranked teams that each entered the game with just one loss apiece. The contest was a first-round matchup at the Randolph-Macon Suyes Yellow Jacket Classic.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) and
Martin Anguelov (Cape May/Wildwood Catholic) led the Ospreys to their sixth straight win with 21 points apiece.
Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) chipped in with 16 points and a game-high seven assists.
Campbell shot 5-10 from three-point range. He and Dawkins shared the team lead with six rebounds apiece. Anguelov went 6-12 from the floor and a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line.
Stockton shot 53.1 percent from the floor and led by double figures four times. A three-point play by Dawkins in the final seconds gave the Ospreys their largest lead at 42-31 heading into halftime.
In the second half, Campbell sank consecutive three-pointers to extend the advantage to 53-36 with 13:54 remaining. Anguelov scored 12 points in the second half and Campbell netted 11 markers as the Ospreys extended their winning streak to six with the 80-66 triumph.
Stockton will face another ranked opponent tomorrow when the Ospreys face #3 Randolph-Macon in the championship game of the Suyes Yellow Jacket Classic at 4 p.m. In addition its ranking of third in the country, Randolph-Macon is the defending NCAA national champion and has a 41-2 record over the last two seasons.
