Mahwah, NJ – Stockton University (6-2, 1-2 NJAC) fought hard but dropped a 68-65 defeat to Ramapo College (7-0, 3-0 NJAC) in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Adriyana Jennings (Camden/Winslow Twp.) had a monster game with career-highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead all players.
The Ospreys took a slim 11-10 lead after one period as the teams battled for every point. Jennings with four points and
Madison LaRosa (Oceanport/Shore Regional) with three led the way.
The second frame saw both squads struggle to score. Stockton shot just 15.4% (2-14) but held the Roadrunners to 0-11 shooting and their only markers came on four free throws, as Stockton extended the margin to 18-14 after the first 20 minutes of play.
Starting the third quarter, the Roadrunners came out on fire, hitting four of their first five shots on an 11-2 run for a 25-20 lead at the 6:54 mark. After a Stockton basket, the home team slowed a bit but still held on to the lead at 34-30 after three quarters of play, outscoring the Ospreys 20-12 in the period.
The fourth period was tight as both teams traded hoops. LaRosa and
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) drained threes to get Stockton within one at 43-42.
Madison Dulude (Washington Twp./Sewell) followed with two free throws to give the Ospreys a 44-43 margin, but Ramapo hit a three of their own to re-take the lead at 46-44 with 3:25 remaining in regulation.
The teams traded baskets once again, before two free throws by
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) and one by Dulude made it 49 all with 24 seconds left. Ramapo had a final shot to win it in regulation, but it fell short, and the game went to an extra period.
The squads came out on fire as the teams both shot over 60% for the frame. The back-and-forth affair finally turned in Ramapo's favor with three free throws after Jennings and Morrone had given Stockton a 62-60 lead with one minute remaining.
Four more from the charity stripe by Jackie Ventricelli in the last 13 seconds sealed the game. A three ball by LaRosa made it 67-65 but one more foul shot by the Roadrunners gave them the 68-65 win.
LaRosa finished with 17 points with Morrone adding 12 and a game-high five assists. Dulude grabbed nine boards and blocked two shots as Stockton held a 52-40 advantage on the glass.
For Ramapo, Ventricelli and Olivia Johnstone scored 14 points each, with Ventricelli hitting 12-14 from the foul line in the game. Jada Thompson chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Stockton will take on Rutgers-Newark at home on Wednesday night for their next game. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm at the Stockton Sports Center.
