Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (2-0) began the 2022 season by sweeping a doubleheader from Penn College (0-2). The Ospreys rallied to win the opener 5-4 in 11 innings and then took the nightcap 1-0 in six innings (darkness).
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) went 4-8 with three RBI and three stolen bases in the twinbill. Perrino reached the 100-hit mark for his career during the first game and drove in the game-winning run in each contest.
Freshman
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) made an impressive debut with two hits, three walks, four runs and five stolen bases in his first two college games.
The Osprey bats took a little time to get going, with a single by Elder for his first career hit the only safety for Stockton in the first five innings of game one. Trailing 4-0, the Ospreys got one the board with one run in the bottom of the eighth.
A double steal by Elder and Perrino put runners at second and third before an RBI groundout by
Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) plated Elder to make it 4-1. The Ospreys were down to their last chance once inning later in the ninth, but they scored three runs on three hits to tie the game 4-4.
Freshman
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) and
Ryan Swift (Sewell/Washington Twp.) each singled and later scored on a wild pitch and a groundout respectively to pull Stockton within 4-3. Elder walked and then stole second and third before scoring the tying run on an RBI single by Perrino to force extra innings.
In the bottom of the 11th, Elder walked again and moved to second on a wild pitch. The rookie then stole third and scored the game-winner on a walk-off single by Perrino for the 5-4 victory.
In his first appearance as an Osprey, transfer
Phil Santa Maria (Absecon/ACIT) tossed two scoreless innings, striking out four without allowing a hit to earn the pitching win.
Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern) hurled a gem in the nightcap as he fanned a career-high 13 batters and walked just one in a two-hit shutout. Stockton was held to four hits and scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third.
Elder was the catalyst again as he led off with a triple and Perrino followed with a sacrifice fly for what proved to be his second game-winning RBI of the day. Schiattarella then retired the final nine batters in order over the fourth through sixth frames before the game was called due to darkness, with the Ospreys completing the sweep 1-0.
Stockton will play at home again Wednesday when the Ospreys host Alvernia in a single game at 3 p.m.
