Westminster, Md. – Stockton University (9-7-1) hung on to win the nightcap of its doubleheader at McDaniel College (14-7) 10-9 and salvage a split after dropping the first game 7-5.
John Perrino (Wall/Wall) went 2-5 with a run and an RBI as the lone Osprey with multiple hits in the opener. Sophomore
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) hit his first career home run.
Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a two-run single by
Thomas Elgrim (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) in the first inning and RBI single by
Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) in the second. McDaniel rallied to take leads of 4-3 and 5-4 before Nieves slugged a solo homer in the top of the eighth for a 5-5 tie.
The home team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to creep in front 7-5. Stockton loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth but could not capitalize and the game ended 7-5 in favor of McDaniel.
Freshman
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) led the Ospreys in the nightcap, going 3-3 with a double, home run, three runs, two RBI, two walks and two stolen bases. Fellow rookie
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) was 3-6 with two RBI and a run.
Stockton snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Perrino and Nitti. Elder slugged his second homer of the season in the seventh frame, a two-run blast that made it 8-2. Nitti and
Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep) delivered RBI singles in the ninth inning for a 10-2 advantage.
McDaniel nearly came all the way back in the bottom of the ninth as the Green Terror scored seven runs to pull within 10-9 and loaded the bases. Freshman
Kyle Cipolla (Westwood/Westwood) came out of the bullpen to induce a game-ending groundout and earn his first career save.
Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) notched his third win of the season on the mound. Schiattarella pitched the first six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and just one walk.
Stockton returns home to host Immaculata University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
