Stockton Rally Falls Short to Neumann

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (3-2-1) rallied after a rough first inning but fell to Neumann University (3-4) 14-10 on Tuesday afternoon.  John Perrino (Wall/Wall) and Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) led the Ospreys with two safeties each in the game that was shortened to seven innings due to darkness.

The Knights sent 15 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, plating 10 runs on seven hits. The visitors added three more markers in the third frame, for a commanding 13-0 margin, before the Osprey bats got going.

In the home half of the fourth inning, Tommy Talbot (Howell/Howell) reached on an error, followed by a Thomas Elgrim (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) walk. Freshman Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) doubled home Talbot to put Stockton on the board. Another error scored Nitti and Elgrim, before Ford knocked in the fourth run of the inning with a double to slice the lead to 13-4.

After the Knights put a single tally up in the fifth, Stockton answered with two more runs. Perrino singled and Talbot and Elgrim both walked loading the bases with none out. Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) plated Perrino with a sacrifice fly, with an error plating Talbot to make the score 14-6 after five innings.

The Ospreys kept the pressure on in the home half of the sixth inning. Giovanni Sciarrotta (Barnegat/Steinert) and Ford both singled. A wild pitch advanced the runners, then Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) plated Sciarrotta. Perrino blasted a long triple to right center scoring Elder and Ford, then scored on a Talbot hit, to close the gap to 14-10.

But that was as close as Stockton would get, as both squads were held scoreless, and the contest was called due to darkness after the seventh inning.

Perrino added two RBI and two runs scored, with Talbot and Sciarrotta also scoring a pair of runs each in the game. Freshman Chris Gonzalez (Hazlet/Raritan) made his first career start but took the loss.

Ryan Lopez led the Knights with three of their 16 hits on the day, scoring three times. Marcus White also scored three times and had three RBI for the visitors. Brennan Hatala the last of four hurlers for Neumann, earned the win in relief, tossing two perfect innings.

Stockton will head to Florida for Spring Break for eight games, starting Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys will face Worcester State University in Auburndale, FL at 1:45 pm for their first game.
