Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-2, 2-0 CSAC) slipped by Kean University (7-4, 1-1 CSAC) 14-13 in a key conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Reegan Capozzoli (Wayne/Wayne Valley) and
Dante Poli (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South) led the Ospreys with four goals each, as Stockton won their fifth straight game.
Poli got things going 1:05 into the match with his first goal of the night for a quick 1-0 lead. After Kean tied it at 8:44, Capozzoli, from
Sean Haddock (East Windsor/Hightstown), regained the margin at 2-1. The Cougars proceeded to knot the game once more at the end of the frame for a 2-2 tie going into period number two.
The Ospreys took a two-goal margin into the break, outscoring the visitors 5-3 in the second period. Three markers by Capozzoli and one each by Haddock and
Luc Swedlund (Randolph/Randolph) gave Stockton a 7-5 lead at the half.
Both teams hit the net five times in a high scoring third period. The home team looked to run away with the match, scoring four times to one for the Cougars for a 11-6 advantage.
After Kean sliced the lead to 7-6 at 10:29,
Logan Holleritter (Oak Ridge/Jefferson Twp.), from Poli,
Brenden McSorley (Mantua/Clearview) and a pair by Poli, pushed Stockton to a brief 11-6 lead with 6:50 remaining in the quarter. The scores by McSorley and the first tally by Poli came just eight seconds apart.
But Kean rallied scoring four times, to offset a goal by
Eric D'Arminio (Roxbury/Roxbury), in the last 2:07 of the period to make it a 12-10 match with one frame to play.
The squads traded goals to start the fourth period, before the Cougars hit the net once more to close the gap to 13-12 with 9:06 remaining in regulation. Poli scored his final goal of the contest at the 7:43 mark and Stockton's defense held on until the final seconds. Kean goalkeeper Thomas Francy fired a length of the field shot as time ran out, that found its way into the net and set the final score at 14-13.
Poli added an assist for a five-point night, while teammate
Tyler Horvath (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South) was dominant in the face-off circle, winning 20-29 (.689) and scooping a game-high 15 ground balls. Goalkeeper
Eric Lindskog (Montville/Montville) made 11 saves in net for Stockton.
Brady Moore topped the Cougars with a game-high five goals, with Tommy Pellegrino scoring twice and dishing a pair of helpers. Matt Palmieri led all players with three caused turnovers, while net minder Francy kicked out 16 shots, in addition to scoring his second career goal.
The Ospreys face Rosemont in the second of three straight home games, on Saturday for their next match. Face-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
