Stockton Splits Twin Bill with #16 Rowan

Glassboro, N.J. – Stockton University (16-14, 5-7 NJAC) split a doubleheader with #16 Rowan (25-7, 10-2 NJAC), dropping the first game 5-0, before winning 2-0 in the nightcap. Vanessa Tancini (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) rapped four hits on the day to lead the offense for Stockton.

The Profs scored all their runs in the first inning of game one, then were stymied by Stevie Unger (Tower City, PA/Williams Valley) the rest of the way. The Ospreys had two runners on with one out in three straight frames from the second through fourth innings but came away empty.

Unger was brilliant in relief, tossing five innings without allowing a hit and striking out two hitters.

In game two, freshman Nicole Smith (Mount Bethel, PA/Bangor Area) tossed her second straight shutout in giving the Ospreys a split of the conference doubleheader. Stockton got all the runs they would need in the third inning for the rookie pitcher.

Smith and fellow frosh Brianna Segnello (Mount Olive/Mount Olive) singled. Rookie Charli Czaczkowski (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) later scored Segnello for the 1-0 lead. Stockton tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) doubled and scored on a Czaczkowski two-bagger for the 2-0 advantage.

Smith then closed out the game and garnered her second win of the season. She allowed just four hits in the whitewash as Stockton hurlers allowed just eight hits total for the Profs in the two games.

Stockton will play against Immaculata in the non-conference twin bill tomorrow for the Ospreys next contests. The first game at Immaculata, PA is set for 3 pm.
