Ewing, NJ – Stockton University (13-19-1, 4-8 NJAC) staged a late rally for the second straight day but fell 11-9 to The College of New Jersey (14-14, 5-7 NJAC) on Friday afternoon. Freshman
Thomas Elgrim (Fair Haven/Rumson-Fair Haven) led the Ospreys' 17-hit attack with four hits on the day.
Like yesterday the Lions exploded out of the gate scoring all 11 of their runs in the first four innings. The visitors tallied a run in the second on a
Ryan Mihlebach (Clarksboro/GCIT) RBI and two more in the fourth frame as
Giovanni Sciarrotta (Barnegat/Steinert) continued his hot hitting with a two-RBI double. In his last three games, the rookie catcher is 5-14 (.357) with five runs and five RBI.
Stockton had opportunities to score early but left 10 runners on base in the first five innings and started a comeback in the sixth stanza. RBI by
Dominic Meleo (Freehold/St. Peter's Prep) and
Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) sliced the margin to 11-6 after six frames. After both teams went scoreless in the seventh, Stockton plated four markers in the top of the eighth.
Sciarrotta doubled and scored on a hit by Fabrizzi. After Meleo walked,
Sam Nieves (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) smashed his third homer of the year to make it 11-9 after eight innings. The Lions bullpen closed the door in the ninth to hold on for the two-run win and a sweep of the home-and-home series.
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) added three hits to the totals, with Nieves knocking in three runs and scoring twice. Fabrizzi and Sciarrotta both had a pair of RBI as every Osprey starter reached base at least once on the day.
Chris Cote topped TCNJ with two hits and four RBI. Teammates Mike Lagravenis and Ryan Goodall both had two safeties as well.
Stockton will return home for a doubleheader against Montclair State tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 am, with Senior Day festivities preceding the first game.
