Stockton Prevails in Eight Innings Twice for Sweep

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (20-14, 7-7 NJAC) won a pair of eight-inning games against William Paterson (14-17, 4-10 NJAC) by scores of 4-3 and 5-4 to boost its current hot streak to seven wins in its last eight games.

Megan Dignam (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and Gabrielle Barranger (Sicklerville/Haddonfield) each contributed walkoff RBI. Samantha McErlane (Mt. Ephraim/Audubon) earned both pitching wins in relief.

Stockton fell behind 3-0 in the opener before rallying with three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. McErlane was hit by a pitch and Barranger followed with a single. Two batters later, James ripped a two-run double to make it 3-2. James later scored the tying run, unearned on a WPU error.

The game went to the eighth inning tied 3-3 and McErlane retired three straight batters in the top half. Michaela Luyber was placed on second base as Stockton's tiebreaker runner in the bottom half. Luyber moved to third on a wild pitch and Dignam stroked a walkoff single up the middle to score Luyber for the 4-3 triumph.

McErlane did not allow a hit in four scoreless innings out of bullpen, striking out three and yielding one walk to earn the pitching victory. She retired 11 of the 12 batters that she faced.

In the nightcap, Barranger went 2-4 with the game-winning RBI and Stevie Unger (Tower City, Pa./Williams Valley) was 2-4 with a run. James slugged another double and tallied two RBI.

After the Pioneers scored once in the top of the second, James doubled in two runs to lift Stockton ahead 2-1 and extend her hitting streak to seven games. The Ospreys added an unearned run in the fourth frame and Gracie Meyer (Pittsgrove/A.P. Schalick) rapped an RBI single in the sixth to make it 4-1.

The Ospreys were three outs away from completing the sweep until William Paterson rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to forge a 4-4 tie. Stockton went scoreless in in the bottom half and the game went to the eighth inning.

With the WPU tiebreaker runner on second, McErlane retired three of the four batters in the inning, issuing an intentional walk with two outs before inducing an inning-ending groundout.

Brianna Segnello (Mt. Olive/Mt. Olive) served as Stockton's tiebreaker runner in the bottom half. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored the game-winner on a fielder's choice RBI by Barranger that gave Stockton its second walkoff win of the day, 5-4.

McErlane allowed one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief to collect her second pitching victory of the doubleheader and eighth of the season.

Stockton will begin the final week of the regular season on Tuesday when the Ospreys play an NJAC twinbill at Rutgers-Camden beginning at 3 p.m.
