Stockton Slips by Whitman 1-0

Galloway, NJ –Stockton University (4-1-1) extended their unbeaten streak to four straight matches, with a tight 1-0 win over Whitman College (3-3) on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Thomas Trimble (Emerson/Emerson) scored his third goal in the past two games to give the Ospreys the victory. It was the sixth match in the past 11 days for the Ospreys to open the season.

The Blues, from Walla Walla, WA, came out strong forcing much of the action in the midfield. Stockton broke through at 16:29 of the first half, when Trimble took a long lead pass from Sebi Morrello (North Caldwell/West Essex) and hit the top left corner for the 1-0 margin.

The lead would remain at the one goal advantage through the rest of the half as both squads played strong defense. The teams fired just three shots each, with none being on net.

The pace picked up in the final frame as Whitman again controlled much of the action. Stockton was able to counter by getting an advantage on corner kicks. The Ospreys took nine attempts in the second half to offset two Blues corner kicks.

13 minutes into the period, the Blues got their first shot on net that was kicked away by Liam Brett (Palmyra/Palmyra). 20 minutes later, Whitman had another attempt that Brett saved. Stockton had one last chance at an insurance tally, when Ian Byrne (Lanoka Harbor/Lacey Twp.) fired a shot that Blues netminder Bernie Jones punched over the cross bar with less than six minutes to play.

That was as close as either team would come in the final minutes, as Stockton came away with the 1-0 victory.

Brett made three saves for his third solo shutout of the season. Jones kicked away two Osprey attempts for Whitman, as both goalkeepers were stellar in the second half.

The Ospreys will finish their four-game home stand, when the Ospreys will face Neumann University on Wednesday night. Kick-off is set for 7:30 pm.
