Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (11-4-5) made a strong bid to upset fifth-ranked Montclair (16-2-1), including netting the game's first goal, however the host Red Hawks scored with just two seconds left in regulation to oust the Ospreys from the NJAC Tournament 2-1.
The Red Hawks were the No. 1 seed and Stockton was the No. 4 seed for the NJAC tourney. The match was Stockton's fourth of the season against a team ranked in the top 12 of the United Soccer Coaches poll at the time of the game.
After a scoreless first half in which each team registered two shots on goal, Stockton took the lead with just 2:29 gone in the second stanza. Freshman
Joseph A. Carbone (East Brunswick/East Brunswick) scored his third goal of the season with an assist by team points leader
Aiden Hoenisch (Bordentown/Notre Dame).
The Red Hawks tied the game 10 minutes later on a marker by Osbin Mendez. Stockton goalkeeper
Brady Bartletta (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) stopped the next five shots on goal that he faced, but Salem Ellisy scored with only two seconds remaining to break the tie and deal the Ospreys the painful 2-1 setback.
Bartletta established a new career high with eight saves and Carbone recorded two of Stockton's three shots on goal. Montclair goalie Shane Keenan made two saves in the contest.
Stockton will find out on Monday if its 11 wins and five ties against a schedule that ranks in the top 10 percent of 412 NCAA Division III teams plus its regional ranking of third in Region IV will be enough to receive an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.
