Aberdeen, S.C. – Stockton University (2-1) began its two-game stint at the Small College Basketball Champions Classic in South Dakota with a resounding 87-71 victory over Keene State (N.H.) (1-1). Four Ospreys hit double figures and Stockton scored 42 points in the paint.
Keene State was ranked No. 4 in the D3hoops.coms preseason poll and the Ospreys were sixth in Others Receiving Votes category. The SCB Champions Classic is in its second year.
Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) led all players with a career-high 21 points followed by
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) with 19 markers plus a game-high five steals. Campbell moved into second in Stockton history with 1,677 career points, passing Jermaine Clay's 1,674 points (1990-94).
Diante Miles (Wildwood/Wildwood) contributed a career-high 13 points and
Martin Anguelov (Cape May/Wildwood Catholic) finished with 11 points for the Ospreys.
Christian Armstrong-Thomas (Marlton/Cherokee) led Stockton to a 43-35 rebound advantage with a team-high nine boards.
Anguelov scored seven points during a 15-3 run in the first half that sparked Stockton to a 32-19 lead. Although Keene State cut the margin nearly in half, the Ospreys led 43-36 at the break. Anguelov and Gaither paced Stockton with 11 and nine points respectively.
Campbell scored five points during a 9-0 run in the second half that boosted the advantage to 15 at 57-42 less than five minutes into the period. The largest lead was 18 points, 62-44, on a three-point play by Armstrong-Thomas with 14 minutes to go, and Stockton led by double figures almost the entire way for the comfortable 87-71 triumph.
Jeff Hunter led Keene State with a double-double of 20 points and 21 rebounds. Mason Jean Baptiste scored 13 points for the Owls.
Stockton will play Saint John's (Minn.) tomorrow at 1:00 EST in its second game at the Small College Basketball Champions Classic.
