Staten Island, N.Y. – Stockton University set two school records and narrowly missed a third in the Big Apple Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. The meet included teams from all three NCAA divisions.
Lauren Maldonado (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) and a trio of freshmen,
Kayla Kass (Bayonne/County Prep),
Emma Conroy (Matawan/Matawan) and
Emma Petrolia (New Milford/New Milford), broke the six-year-old school record in the 4x400 relay by just under two seconds with a time of 4:00.57.
The quartet finished fourth out of 18 teams and was the only Division III unit that placed in the top 10.
Shahyan Abraham (Orange/Orange) broke her own school record in the weight throw with an effort of 17.58m that moved her into 11th in the nation and was third out of 45 competitors. Abraham also finished fifth out of 53 in the shot put. She was the top Division III thrower in each event.
Ashanae Morrison (East Brunswick/East Brunswick) nearly set a school record of her own with a time of 7.97 seconds that was second out of 48 in the 60m and qualified her for the Atlantic Region Championships.
In addition to the relay record, Kass placed 10th out of 46 runners in the 800m (2:20.53) and Petrolia finished 12th out of 26 in the triple jump (10.68m).
Joseph Morales (Toms River/TR North) led the Stockton men's team by placing sixth out of 20 behind five Division I athletes in the pole vault (4.45m).
Mike Carfagno (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) finished eighth out of 43 in the shot put (14.30m). He too was the top Division III performer in the event.
Dontay Turner (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) placed 10th out of 30 sprinters in the 60m (7.39 seconds) and
Connor Wright (Sicklerville/Hammonton) was 11th out of 38 in the long jump (6.47m).
Stockton will return to Ocean Breeze on February 20 for the NJAC Championships. The conference meet begins at 4 p.m.
