Union, N.J. – Stockton University (12-13, 7-11 NJAC) brought its 2022-23 season to a closed with a 63-50 setback at Kean University (16-9, 14-4 NJAC), which finished in a tie for first place in the league. Despite the outcome, Stockton finished the season with 12 wins, its most since the 2017-18 slate.
Adriyana Jennings (Camden/Winslow Twp.) led the Ospreys with team highs of 17 points and seven rebounds. Jennings shot 8-16 (50%) from the field in the game.
Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) and
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) scored eight points apiece and dished five and four assists respectively. Freshman
Ikechi Wokocha (Galloway/Absegami) established career highs with seven points and five rebounds.
Stockton got off to a great start as eight points by Fathi and six from Morrone sparked the Ospreys to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter.
Nicole Strumolo (Denville/Morris Catholic) opened the second period with a three-pointer to make it 22-9, but Stockton was outscored 22-4 the rest of the way and trailed 31-26 at the half.
After the Ospreys tied the game 37-37 in the third quarter, Kean reeled off nine straight points before a Strumolo jumper in the closing seconds cut it to 46-39 entering the fourth stanza. The margin reached 11 before five points in a row by Jennings got Stockton with 50-44 with 6:35 left in the game.
The rally stalled as the Cougars used a 13-4 run to clinch the outcome, and the Ospreys fell 63-50 in the season finale.
Shannon McCoy, the reigning NJAC Player of the Year, paced Kean with a game-high 21 points. Brittany Graff scored 13 markers and Shahd Badeer grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Stockton won 12 games with a roster that included nine freshmen and two sophomores this season. All 16 players on the squad are potential returnees next year.
