Stockton Varsity Eight Wins Gold at Knecht Cup

Cherry Hill, N.J. - Stockton University continued its strong start to the spring season by winning gold in the varsity eight at the Knecht Cup for the first time since 1999. The Ospreys posted a time of 7:30.85 on the Cooper River and crossed the finish line first in the Women's Varsity Eight-DIII by a dominant 21 seconds in the field of six teams.
 
Lorelei Hendricks (Burlington/Doane Academy) was the coxswain for the varsity eight. The rowers were Emily Latshaw (Toms River/TR South), Amber Hartzell (Merchantville/Haddon Hts.), Megan Baldwin (Brigantine/Holy Spirit), Madelynn Schina (Somerdale/Highland), Marissa Martinelli (Burlington/Burlington Twp.), Ashley Timm (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT), Gabriella Bates (Manahawkin/Southern) and Izabelle DelRoss (Egg Harbor City/Cedar Creek).

"Today was a great challenge for both the varsity eight and second varsity eight," said head coach Chris O'Brien. "I'm proud of our crews for executing solid race plans. They are starting to believe in their speed and potential. We know we have to be at top speed for the conference championships and we are excited for that opportunity."
 
Stockton finished ahead of runner-up Bryn Mawr plus Catholic University, Franklin & Marshall, the Stockton second varsity eight and the Bryn Mawr second varsity eight. The Ospreys qualified with the fastest time in yesterday's heats and shaved five seconds off their qualifying mark in today's final.
 
Kelley Mason (Manhattan, N.Y./St. Vincent Ferrer) was the coxswain for the second varsity eight that finished fifth at 8:09.24. Yesterday, the second varsity eight earned the last spot in the final, where they edged the Bryn Mawr second varsity eight by two seconds for fifth place.
 
Alexandra Zang (San Carlos, Calif./Carlmont), Katie Kurtz (Galloway/Cedar Creek), Erin O'Brien (Edgewater Park/Burlington City), Emily Little (Wildwood/Wildwood), Allison Reed (Cherry Hill/CH East), Ashley Truesdell (Pennington/Hopewell Valley), Jordan Barikian (Cape May/Lower Cape May) and Emma Dyrsten (Sparta/Sparta) rowed for the second varsity eight.
 
Stockton also competed in the varsity four, placing sixth with a time of 9:32.98. Mason was the coxswain for the varsity four, with Reese Weirick (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), Kimberly Canelas (Galloway/ACIT), Lexi Kripetz (Clinton/Voorhees) and Jarah Higbee (Northfield/Mainland) doing the rowing.
 
Stockton will head to Philadelphia next weekend to compete in the Kerr Cup on April 22.
