Stockton Starts NJAC Play with Split at Ramapo

Mahwah, N.J. – Stockton University (9-11, 1-1 NJAC) started conference play by splitting a doubleheader at Ramapo (15-5, 1-1). The Ospreys dropped the opener 7-3 but slugged five extra-base hits including two home runs on the way to taking the nightcap 6-4.

Charli Czaczkowski (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) led the offense with four hits and three RBI on the day. Czaczkowski went 1-3 with an RBI for one of Stockton's three hits in the first game. Gabrielle Barranger (Sicklerville/Haddonfield) singled and scored in the contest.

Stockton fell behind 7-0 in the first four innings. The Ospreys plated all three of their runs in the sixth stanza, with Czaczkowski and Jenna Patterson (Mullica Hill/Clearview) rapping RBI singles and Barranger scoring a run.

Although not involved in the decision, freshman Abigail Tunney (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) pitched two scoreless innings in relief and retired six of the seven batters that she faced.

In the second game, Czaczkowski went 3-4 with a double, home run and two RBI. Lilly James (Roseland/West Essex) blasted a home run and Brianna Segnello (Mt. Olive/Mt. Olive) was 1-3 with a double and a run scored.

Stockton exploded for five runs in the third inning. James and Czaczkowski slugged solo homers while Barranger and Segnello each walked and scored during the big inning. Ramapo made it 5-2 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, but Czaczkowski knocked an RBI single in the top of the seventh for a 6-2 lead.

The Ospreys yielded a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh before closing out the 6-4 triumph. Pitcher Nicole Smith (Mt. Bethel, Pa./Bangor Area) tossed 3.2 innings out of the bullpen to earn the win. Smith allowed just two unearned runs on five hits.

Anna Messina paced Ramapo with two hits in each game and Avery Kontura hit a home run in each contest for the Roadrunners.

Stockton will host The College of New Jersey in an NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
