Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (22-18, 8-10 NJAC) ended the NJAC regular season in thrilling fashion by sweeping a twin bill from Rutgers-Newark (21-16-1, 5-12-1 NJAC) with scores of 4-0 and 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
Mike Schiattarella (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) tossed a seven inning, two-hit gem in game one, before
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) blasted a walk-off grand slam to capture the nightcap, as Stockton celebrated Senior Day in a big way.
In the opener, Schiattarella and Daniel Reardon hooked up in a pitcher's duel through the first six innings. The Stockton senior hurler allowed his two safeties in the first three frames, while Reardon held the Ospreys hitless through 4.2 innings.
The game remained scoreless until the home half of the seventh inning, when Stockton plated all four of their runs. Two singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for
Kevin Novobilsky (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.), who singled in the first tally.
Nitti followed with a double scoring a pair, then
Luke Fabrizzi (Old Bridge/St. John Vianney) doubled, knocking in the fourth run of the inning.
Dylan Sakele (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) and
Reece Miller (Toms River/Toms River East) gave Schiattarella his sixth win of the year with a scoreless inning each to nail down the 4-0 win.
Game two started much like the opener, with the teams scoreless after three innings, before the Scarlet Raiders tallied two runs in the fourth stanza and another pair in the sixth for a 4-0 advantage. Stockton broke through with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to slice the margin in half.
Frank Bellezza (Avon/St. Rose) walked and
C.J. Fredericks (Jobstown/Northern Burlington) smacked a long double. With one away,
Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) reached on a fielder's choice scoring Bellezza, then Novobilsky plated Fredericks with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Raiders scored another run in the top of the ninth for a 5-2 lead, setting up Nitti's heroics.
Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan) walked, Kaplan singled, then Novobilsky was hit by a pitch. Nitti then smashed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for the game-winning grand slam to give Stockton a thrilling 6-5 come-from-behind victory.
Bellezza, a senior, appeared in his first career game on the mound in the top of the ninth and came away with his first career win, with Nitti totaling six RBI on the day.
Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) reached base in each game, extending his on base streak to 25 straight games.
Two single-season records fell for Stockton today, when freshman
Preston Fazekas (Pompton Plains/Pequannock Twp.) appeared in his 19th game of the year, tossing a scoreless inning in the second game. In doing so, Fazekas broke the single-season mark of 18 for appearances by a pitcher set twice in Stockton's history.
Novobilsky scored a run in each game giving him 44 on the year, breaking the mark for runs in a season of 43 set in 2008 by Chris Discher.
Stockton will await the results of other NJAC games to see if they have qualified for the NJAC Tournament that starts Thursday.
