Stockton Late Rally Falls Short to William Paterson

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (13-7, 10-3 NJAC) saw their four game winning streak come to a halt, as William Paterson (6-14, 4-9 NJAC) downed the Ospreys 75-67 on Saturday afternoon. Madison Dulude (Sewell/Washington Twp.) and Grace Speer (Estell Manor/ACIT each scored 15 points as four Ospreys hit double figures.
 
Stockton started slowly, missing their first seven shots, allowing the Pioneers to jump out to a 12-2 lead with 4:05 left in the first period. Katie Rausch (Monmouth Junction/South Brunswick) scored a three point basket to give the Ospreys some life, but the home team trailed 19-8 after one frame.
 
The Ospreys got back on track, outscoring William Paterson 18-16 in the second period to cut the lead to 35-26 at the break. Rausch with a pair of threes and Speer with four points topped the squad as Stockton scored eight of the final 11 points in the final two minutes to slice the margin to nine at the half.
 
In the third quarter, Stockton scored 10 of the first 15 points of the stanza, closing to 40-36 at the 4:14 mark, before Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) hit one from behind the arc to give Stockton its first lead of the game 44-42 with 1:12 left in the frame.
 
A pair of free throws by the visitors made it 44-44 after three quarters setting up the tense final period. Dulude scored eight points in the stanza to lead the comeback for the Ospreys. The defense stiffened as the Pioneers made just 2-12 (16.7%) from the floor, helping the Ospreys cause.
 
William Paterson got back on track scoring 15 of the first 19 points on 6-7 (85.7%) shooting to regain the lead at 59-48 with 5:18 left, forcing Stockton to a timeout. The Ospreys made one final charge led by Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) and Speer, who combined for 11 points, cutting the margin to 63-59 with 2:35 left in regulation.
 
That was as close as the home team would come as the Pioneers sealed the game hitting 12-16 from the free throw line to garner the 75-67 victory.
 
In addition to her 15 markers, Speer grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to lead all players, with Dulude tying her season-high in points. Fathi and Rausch each tallied 12 points, with Rausch garnering a new career high and Fathi topping all players with seven assists.
 
Brianna Smith and Renee Wells tied for game-high honors with 20 points each to top the Pioneers. Mattison Chiera chipped in with 10 points.
 
Stockton next contest will be a road tilt against Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday night in Newark, NJ. Game time is set for 6 pm.
