Union, N.J. – Stockton University (10-8, 3-3 NJAC) earned an NJAC Tournament berth in dramatic fashion as the Ospreys topped Kean University (6-12, 2-4) 3-2 in a shootout as the teams dueled for the last spot in the conference playoffs.
Stockton led by a goal twice in the game, only to see Kean tie the score each time.
Kirsten Bailey (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) and
Kiera Lyons (Manahawkin/Southern Regional) each scored during the game and converted their attempts in the shootout.
Bailey and Lyons were matched by a pair of successful tries from Kean in the shootout, which was deadlocked 2-2 after four rounds. After a miss by the Cougars to start the fifth and final round,
Carlee Thompson (Gibbsboro/Eastern Regional) converted to give Stockton the 3-2 victory.
Bailey scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season with an assist by
Riley DeMarco (Hammonton/Cedar Creek) just 2:59 into the game. Kean tied it for the first time at 1-1 in the second quarter.
Lyons netted her eighth goal, second on the squad behind Bailey, unassisted in the third quarter to put Stockton back on top 2-1. The Cougars responded with 9:55 left in the regulation to force overtime at 2-2.
Stockton goaltender
Erika Roura (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) made five of her six saves in the two overtime periods and Bailey had a scoring chance denied on a defensive save by a Kean field player in the second OT. With an NJAC Tournament berth on the line, the Ospreys prevailed 3-2 in the shootout.
Stockton is the No. 4 seed for the NJAC Tournament and will play a semifinal at No. 1 seed Rowan University on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
