Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (17-10) was denied the program's 11th NJAC championship in school history as The College of New Jersey (20-8) downed the Ospreys 75-62 at The Sports Center. Stockton gamely tried to rally from a deficit that reached as high as 17 points, but they could not overtake the Lions.
DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) scored a game-high 23 points and finished his outstanding career with a school-record 2,170 points.
EJ Matthews-Spratley (Cherry Hill/CH East) also hit double figures with 13 markers.
Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds while
Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) tallied eight points and seven boards.
After some early back-and-forth, TCNJ began a three-point shooting barrage that lasted into the second half. The Lions sank three threes during a 15-3 run that put Stockton down 22-9. Eight points by Campbell helped close gap to 33-26, but TCNJ then reeled off 10 straight for Stockton's biggest deficit of the night at 43-26.
Stockton ended the half with an 11-2 run including the last five points by Campbell to get within single digits at 45-37. TCNJ shot a blistering 9-12 (75%) from three-point range in the half while Campbell kept the Ospreys in it with 16 first-half points.
The visitors picked up right where they left off beyond the arc, hitting their first three attempts of the second half to increase their shooting to 78.6% (11-14) on the way to a 56-44 count. Trailing 61-46 with 13:23 to play, Stockton began to chip away. Matthews-Spratley scored four points to lead a charge of 13 straight markers that made it a two-point game at 61-59.
Matthews-Spratley later drilled a three-pointer to again make it a one-possession game at 65-62 with 3:56 on the clock. After a TCNJ miss, Stockton had a three-point shot to tie, but the attempt was off the mark. The Lions then scored the last 10 points of the game to claim the NJAC title 75-62 over Stockton, which played in the league championship for the fifth straight year.
Nick Koch paced TCNJ with 20 points and seven assists. Matthew Okorie contributed 19 points and nine rebounds while James Beckwith shot a near-perfect 5-6 (83.3%) from three-point range and finished with 17 points.
Stockton finished the season with 17 victories, its fourth full season with at least that many wins.
