Swarthmore, PA – Stockton University (2-3) fell 13-9 to host Swarthmore (3-2) on Friday afternoon, in a game shortened to eight innings due to darkness.
Austin Beard (Toms River/Toms River South) came off the bench to smack three hits and drive in a pair of RBI to lead the Ospreys.
The high scoring affair saw Stockton plate two runs in the first two innings, but the Garnet answered with seven markers for a 7-4 lead after two frames.
Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) knocked in a pair in the first inning, followed by two RBI by
Tony Gatti (Howell/Howell) in the second.
After Swarthmore gained another run to make it 8-4, the Ospreys scored three times in the top of the fifth to close to within one run at 8-7. Beard knocked in a run; an error scored the second marker then freshman
Russell Halvorsen (Howell/Howell) hit a sacrifice fly to get Stockton within one.
But it was short lived as the Garnet opened the margin back up with a five spot in the bottom of the frame to make it 13-7. Stockton added single tallies in the seventh and eighth innings before the game was called due to darkness.
In addition to Beard, Gatti, Kaplan and
Evan Bresnen (Allentown/Steinert) all had two hits with Bresnen scoring twice.
Phil Santa Maria (Absecon/ACIT), the first of three hurlers for Stockton, started and took the loss on the mound.
Stockton will travel to Patchogue, NY on Sunday for a doubleheader against St. Joseph's-Long Island. The games are scheduled for 12pm and 3 pm.
