Stockton Downs #17 TCNJ 5-2

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (16-12, 7-3 NJAC) played solid baseball in grinding out a 5-2 victory over The College of New Jersey (18-8, 6-4 NJAC) by a 5-2 score on Sunday afternoon. Six different Ospreys had hits on the day with Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) providing the big blow with a two-run home run and scoring twice on the day. The contest was rescheduled from Friday's rain out.

Stockton opened the scoring in the first inning on a Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) RBI for a 1-0 lead. The home team scored single runs in the bottom of the fourth on an error and sixth on a fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead. Avagnano blasted his team leading fifth home run in the seventh inning to pad the margin to 5-0, before the Lions sliced into the lead.

Two runs in the top of the eighth inning made it 5-2 before Reece Miller (Toms River/Toms River East) came on to put out the fire. He earned his fifth save of the season by getting the final five outs of the game, preserving the three-run victory for Stockton.

Alfonso Lombardi (Wayne/Cedar Grove) picked up his third win of the season, tossing five shutout innings and scattering five hits. Freshman Danny Furlong (Howell/Howell) and Kyle Cipolla (Westwood/Westwood) came on in relief of Lombardi with 1.1 innings combined, to set up Miller who pitched 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.

The Lions were led by Zach Hochheiser who had three of the team's 10 hits on the day.

Stockton will begin a home-and-home series against Rutgers-Camden on Thursday at Camden, NJ. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
