Madison, N.J. – Stockton University (3-1) absorbed its first setback of the season after opening with three straight wins as the Ospreys were edged 64-62 by FDU-Florham (4-1) in overtime. The close game featured 15 lead changes and 11 ties.
Freshman
Bre Evans (Neptune/Neptune) scored a career-high 15 points followed by
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) with 14 markers. Fathi shot 5-10 (50%) from the field and Evans dished a team-high four assists.
Grace Speer (Estell Manor/ACIT) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.
Aiyonna Alexander (Sicklerville/Winslow Twp.) grabbed a team-high nine boards and added five points for the Ospreys.
Two free throws by Speer gave Stockton a 57-55 edge with 1:29 to play, but FDU-Florham tied the game with a layup at the 27-second mark. The Ospreys took a shot and grabbed an offensive rebound in the final 20 seconds, however they were unable to convert, and the game went to overtime.
Evans scored Stockton's first four points of OT, with her layup tying the game 61-61 with 1:23 on the clock. The Devils went up 62-61 with a free throw and added two more for a 64-61 count with 36 ticks left. Fathi sank a free throw with nine seconds remaining to make it 64-62, but the Ospreys fell by that two-point margin.
Earlier, Stockton fell behind 20-12 in the first quarter then rallied to within 30-29 with a 17-10 advantage in the second period, sparked by Fathi with five points. FDU-Florham crept out to a four-point lead in the third quarter before baskets by
Madisyn McNair (Hackensack/Hackensack) and
Lauren Winant (Middletown/Middletown South) tied the game 42-42 after three.
Stockton led 55-51 with 2:42 left in regulation, but the Devils closed with a 6-2 spurt to send the game to overtime. Shannon Tigue paced the home team with 16 points in the game, followed by Bianca Sode with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Stockton will start NJAC play on Tuesday with a road game at Kean University that tips off at 5:30 p.m.
