Wayne, N.J. – Stockton University (4-3, 1-2 NJAC) was denied in its bid to deal unbeaten William Paterson (7-0, 3-0 NJAC) its first loss of the season as the Ospreys fell 58-49 to the Pioneers. Stockton was within two points of the lead early in the fourth quarter.
Freshman
Madisyn McNair (Hackensack/Hackensack) led the Ospreys with a career-high 14 points. McNair shot 5-10 (50%) from the floor including a perfect 3-3 beyond the arc. Eleven of McNair's points came in the second half.
Imene Fathi (Wildwood/Wildwood) totaled nine points, four rebounds, a game-high four assists and three steals.
Lauren Winant (Middletown/Middletown South) also scored nine points.
Zemirah Enalls (Barnegat/Barnegat) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and netted seven points.
Stockton was outscored by three in each of the first two quarters for a 25-19 deficit at halftime. Seven Ospreys scored in the first half, and Enalls topped the Ospreys with five points before the break.
The offensive pace improved in the third quarter, with Stockton topping its entire first-half total by scoring 21 points in the period. The Ospreys used a 15-7 run over the last 3:43 to cut a 10-point margin down to two at 42-40. McNair and Fathi led the rally with four points apiece.
After Stockton got within 44-42 on a layup by Fathi early in the fourth quarter, William Paterson reeled off seven straight points for a 51-42 count. The Ospreys closed the gap to three at 52-49 on a three-pointer by McNair with 2:20 remaining, but the Pioneers scored the last six points of the game for the 58-49 final.
Renee Wells paced WPU with a game-high 21 points. Former Stockton softball and volleyball player Megan Sears, now a graduate student at William Paterson, tallied seven points and three rebounds in 21 minutes of playing time.
Stockton will be on the road again on Wednesday for an NJAC game at New Jersey City at 5:30 p.m.
