Winter Haven, Fla. – Stockton University (5-5) suffered a pair of setbacks in Florida, falling to Loras (Iowa) (8-3) 11-6 and Husson (Maine) (1-3) 4-3 in 10 innings.
Joe Gmitter (Hamilton/Steinert) led the Ospreys with three hits in each game.
Gmitter went 3-5 with two RBI and a stolen base against Loras.
Tony Gatti (Howell/Howell) was 2-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
Russell Halvorsen (Howell/Howell) stroked one hit and scored twice.
Loras tallied five runs in the top of the first. Stockton closed the gap to 5-4 with three runs in the third inning and one more in the fifth. Loras answered with four runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-4 count. The Ospreys made it 9-6 but got no closer in the 11-6 setback.
Stockton used six pitchers, with
Dominic Mallamaci (Manalapan/Red Bank Catholic) effective in relief by tossing four scoreless innings and allowing just one hit with five strikeouts.
Gmitter went 3-4 with a double and an RBI against Husson.
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) and
Conner Praschil (Emerson/Emerson) each singled and scored in the game. Starter
Antonio Sansone (Middletown/Middletown North) went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Stockton got a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Gmitter that scored Nitti. Husson plated the next three runs of the game. The Ospreys made it 3-2 in the fourth inning and then tied the game 3-3 on an RBI single by Gatti that brought Praschil home in the seventh stanza.
Husson broke the deadlock with a run on two hits in the top of the 10th frame and edged Stockton 4-3.
Stockton will play Salve Regina (R.I.) tomorrow morning at 9:45 a.m.
