Stockton Takes Two from McDaniel

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-8) evened their record with a doubleheader sweep over McDaniel College (7-11-1) by scores of 7-4 and 7-6 in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon. Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) had a big day for the Ospreys with six hits three runs and three RBI on the day.

Game one featured a sterling pitching effort from Stephen DeMilio (Tuckerton/Pinelands) as he tossed eight innings, allowing four hits, two runs and striking out seven hitters for his third win of the season. He got run support from his offense with one marker in the second inning, four more in the third and a pair in the fifth frame for a 7-2 lead.

Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove), in his first game back from injury, banged out two hits with two runs, with Avagnano and Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan) getting three hits each. Reece Miller tossed the ninth inning for his second save of the season in the 7-4 victory.

The nightcap turned into a tense affair with the Green Terror taking a 3-1 lead after three innings, Stockton was able to cut the lead to 3-2 after six innings and had two opportunities to knot the game in the seventh and eighth innings but came away empty.

McDaniel scored in the top of the ninth inning, setting up late heroics from the home team in their half of the stanza. Avagnano started the two-run rally with a single, and with two away, Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) singled, putting runners on the corners with two out.

Ford stole second and Evan Bresnen (Allentown/Steinert) walked loading the bases. A pair of hit batters knotted the game at 4-4 heading to the 10th inning. Once again McDaniel scored to take a 6-4 lead, but Stockton was not deterred.

Antonucci walked and Russell Halvorsen (Howell/Howell) was hit by a pitch, setting up Avagnano. His double down the left field line scored both runners and the game was tied at 6-6. With one out, Ford was walked intentionally. Bresnen bounced into a fielder's choice advancing Avagnano to third, where he scored the eventual game winner on a wild pitch giving the Ospreys a 7-6 win and a sweep of the twin bill.

Antonio Sansone (Middletown/Middletown North) picked up his second win of the season with a scoreless 10th inning in relief.

Ben Davis led the Green Terror with five hits and five RBI on the day.

Stockton will take to the road for the next two games, starting with a trip to Immaculata, PA to face the Mighty Macs on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
