Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (13-15, 3-7 NJAC) split a doubleheader with Montclair State (20-10, 6-3 NJAC) at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday. The Ospreys were edged 5-4 in 10 innings, but they rebounded to earn the split with a 6-2 win.
In the opener,
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) went 2-4 with two runs while
Tony Gatti (Howell/Howell) and
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) knocked two hits apiece.
The Ospreys led 4-2 after an RBI single by
Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) in the top of the sixth, but Montclair rallied with a run in the seventh inning followed by an unearned run in the eighth. Stockton went down in order in the top of the 10th and the Red Hawks scored in the bottom half for the 5-4 final.
Starter
Stephen DeMilio (Tuckerton/Pinelands) pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run plus one unearned and striking out three, but he was not involved in the decision.
Stockton lefty
Zack McCabe (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) pitched his first career complete game in the nightcap. McCabe held Montclair scoreless until the bottom of the ninth and finished with an outstanding line of two runs (one unearned) on five hits with two strikeouts and just one walk.
Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan) led the offense by going 3-4 with one walk, one run and one RBI. Fiore went 2-3 with two walks, one run and one RBI while Gatti added two hits, a walk and a run.
Fiore capped a three-run third inning with an RBI single that gave Stockton a 3-0 lead.
Joe Gmitter (Hamilton/Steinert) stroked an RBI single in the sixth frame and the Ospreys tacked on two more runs in the ninth on an RBI double by
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) and a bases-loaded walk to Antonucci that made it 6-0.
The Red Hawks spoiled McCabe's shutout bid with a pair in the bottom of the night, but Stockton earned the split with the 6-2 triumph.
The Ospreys will host Gwynedd Mercy in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
