Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (19-19, 7-10 NJAC) dropped their final doubleheader of the season, falling to Ramapo College (26-12, 10-8 NJAC) by scores of 12-9 and 12-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Joe Gmitter (Hamilton/Steinert) led the Ospreys with four hits on the day and became the fifth player with 60 hits in a single season for Stockton. The junior also finished with a .405 batting average, placing him eighth a single season at Stockton.
The Ospreys jumped out to a 4-3 lead after three innings in game one, three coming in the second frame. Freshman
Chris Galasso (Matawan/Matawan) knocked in two with a single then
Jordan Nitti (Hamilton/Steinert) was hit by a pitch for the third run of the inning. Ramapo responded with nine runs over a four inning span to take a 12-4 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth inning.
Stockton tried to rally plating four markers in the inning. The home team loaded the bases with no out, when
Michael Antonucci (Manasquan/Manasquan) and Nitti walked forcing in a pair of runs. Gmitter followed with a two-RBI single to cut the lead to 12-8. The Ospreys plated another run in the last inning on a
Tucker Elder (Ewing/Ewing) RBI, but the rally ended there in the 12-9 defeat.
The Ospreys carried the momentum into the nightcap, jumping out to a 5-2 lead after three frames. Three unearned runs and a
Matthew McCloskey (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) RBI accounted for four of the markers in the second inning. Ramapo responded with 10 runs over a four-inning span, to a single tally for Stockton to take the second game 12-6.
Galasso and Elder both had three hits in the opener with Galasso, Nitti, and Gmitter picking up two RBI each. Gmitter and
Robbie Ford (Green Twp./Newton) had two hits each with
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) scoring twice in the second game.
For Ramapo, Zack Bailey had six hits, including a pair of home runs, seven RBI and five runs scored on the day. Julian Caruso added five hits and six runs in the doubleheader.
Stockton ends the season with 19 wins that included victories over three nationally ranked teams in #2 Salve Regina, #6 Kean and #8 Salisbury.
