2024-25 Stockton Men’s Basketball Season Recap

Overview
Stockton Men's Basketball played in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year, tying the longest streak in program history (1987-90). The Ospreys earned an NCAA berth for the 20th time in the program's 53 seasons, finishing with 19 wins (19-9 record).
 
Stockton battled injuries by showing remarkable depth with 13 players seeing action in 11 or more games and four playing in all 28 contests for head coach Scott Bittner in his ninth season at the helm. The Ospreys set school records for scoring average (84.5 ppg), free throws made (533) and rebounds (1,237).
 
Stockton led the NJAC in rebounding (44.1 rpg) and rebound margin (+7.4) while placing second in scoring (84.5 ppg), opponent field goal percentage (.419) and opponent three-point field goal percentage (.305). The squad also placed fourth in NCAA Division III in free throws made per game (19.0) and seventh in free throw attempts per game (25.8).

Highlights
  • EJ Matthews-Spratley set a Stockton record by averaging 22.9 points per game and finished the season with 642 points, the second highest total in program history. The guard sank 94 three-pointers, the third most ever at Stockton. He reached the 1,000-point mark for his career during Stockton's game at New Jersey City on February 5.
  • Matthews-Spratley scored at least 20 points in 18 of 28 games, highlighted by five games over 30 markers. He went off for 41 points against Gettysburg on January 4 and 38 points versus Montclair State on February 8. Those totals tied for second and sixth in Stockton history, respectively.
  • Matthews-Spratley ranked in the top 20 of NCAA Division III in eight statistical categories. He was second in three-point attempts (258), fifth in points (642) and three-pointers (94), seventh in free throws (150), 10th in three-pointers per game (3.36), 11th in points per game (22.9) and field goal attempts (457), and 19th in free throw percentage (.893).
  • Matthews-Spratley led the NJAC in scoring and free throw percentage and finished second in three-pointers, sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.364), eighth in minutes played (31.9 mpg), tied for eighth in assists (3.2 apg) and 10th in assist/turnover ratio (0.9).
  • Eriq Campbell filled the stat sheet while starting a team-high 27 of Stockton's 28 games. Campbell averaged 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds and made an impact defensively by leading the team in steals (1.4 spg) and finishing second in blocks (0.6 bpg). Campbell surpassed the 20-point mark seven times and recorded four double-doubles.
  • Martin Anguelov had a tremendous half-season before an injury cut his year short. In 12 games, Anguelov averaged 18.5 points, highlighted by a school-record 45 points against TCNJ on December 4 plus two more games over 30 points. The senior also averaged 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 three-pointers and 2.0 assists per game.
  • Tayvon Gaither played 24 games with 17 starts, averaging 10.9 points and 4.8 rebounds. Gaither shot a team-best 48.1% from the field and was solid at the free throw line, shooing 74.7% for the year. The junior hit double figures 14 times and posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double versus Kean on November 26.
  • Christian Armstrong-Thomas led the team in rebounding (6.6 rpg) and blocks (0.7 bpg), finishing seventh and 11th respectively in the NJAC. Armstrong-Thomas also chipped in 6.8 points per game and finished second on the team in steals (1.1 spg).
  • Jahmir Payoute and Logan Mckee were key newcomers as freshmen. Payoute played in all 28 games, averaging 4.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game to go with 47.7% shooting from the field. The rookie grabbed 20 rebounds against Rowan on February 19, the second highest in Stockton history and second most in the NJAC this season.
  • Mckee averaged 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 three-pointers in 22 games in his first season. The rookie also went 15-18 (83.3%) at the free throw line. He scored in double digits eight times including his first two career double-doubles.
  • Jamar Johnson (25 games, 2.6 apg), Devon Johnson (25 games, 6.8 ppg, 1.4 3PFG/g) and Andrew Crawford (28 games, 42 assists, 22 steals) provided valuable minutes off the bench. Jamar Johnson finished second on the team in assists and recorded an impressive 2.6 assist-turnover ratio in 19.4 minutes per game.
  • Devon Johnson shot 35.8% (34-95) from three-point range and 86.8% (33-38) at the free throw line. Crawford, one of just four Ospreys who played in every game, was efficient with a 2.8 assist-turnover ratio in 12.4 minutes per game.
  • Josh Randall (15 games) and Michael Evans (12 games) played valuable roles late in the season. Once healthy, Randall played 15 games and shot 50% (10-20) from the field. Evans shot 40.7% (11-27) from the three-point line in 12 games played.
