Montclair, N.J. – Stockton University (7-7, 4-3 NJAC) was just five seconds away from dealing 10th-ranked Montclair State (14-0, 7-0 NJAC) its first loss of the season, however the Red Hawks improbably sank two three-pointers to stun the Ospreys 94-92.
Justin Harper (Bridgeton/Wildwood Catholic) led Stockton with a game-high 23 points for his fifth game in the past nine with at least 20 markers.
Logan Mckee (Glen Mills, Pa./Phelps School) scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) shot 6-9 (67%) for 12 points while
Andrew Crawford (Haddon Hts./Camden Catholic) tossed in nine points and tied his career highs of eight rebounds and seven assists.
Jahmir Payoute (Irvington/Snyder) and
Charlie Bell (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) netted nine points apiece.
Stockton outrebounded Montclair 43-29 and shot a season-best 43.5% (10-23) from three-point range. The Ospreys led for over 34 minutes and trailed for just 2:13 in the entire game, yet they came out on the wrong end of the dramatic finish.
Stockton shot 54.1% from the field in the first half on the way to a 47-42 lead behind 15 points by Harper. The Ospreys led by as much as nine and never trailed by more than two in the period.
In the second half, Stockton boosted the lead to 13 at 72-59 on a three-pointer by Mckee with 11:32 on the clock. The Ospreys stayed in front and later led 92-88 after two free throws by Harper with 15 seconds to play.
Montclair's Jacob Morales banked in a three-pointer with 4.2 seconds left to make it 92-91. After a Stockton turnover on the inbounds pass, Kabrien Goss swished a fadeaway three-pointer with 1.6 ticks remaining to put the Red Hawks ahead. A half-court heave by the Ospreys was off the mark and Stockton suffered the astonishing 94-92 setback.
Morales paced unbeaten Montclair with 20 points followed by Ahmad Robertson with 14 points and Kunga Tsering with 13 points.
Stockton returns home to host Rowan University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
