Flemington, N.J. – Stockton University (0-2) finally opened the 2026 season after several postponements and cancellations, however the Ospreys fell twice to Union College (N.Y.) (2-0) by scores of 14-5 and 7-6 in 10 innings at Diamond Nation.
In the first game,
Conner Praschil (Emerson/Emerson) went 2-3 with a double. Freshman
Liam Schwinn (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) was 1-2 with a double and an RBI in his first college game.
Union scored twice in the second inning, once in the third and three times in the fifth before the Ospreys got on the board in the top of the sixth. Freshman
Logan Madison (Warminster, Pa./Warminster) earned his first college RBI with a groundout and Schwinn rapped an RBI double to make it 6-2.
After Union scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, freshman
Thomas Bomberger (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made his first career hit a memorable one with a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the top of the seventh to end the scoring in the 14-5 setback.
Schwinn continued his impressive debut by going 3-4 with two runs, one RBI and one walk in the nightcap.
Russell Halvorsen (Howell/Howell) and newcomer
Yenuelle Rodriguez (Vineland/Vineland) each contributed two hits and a run.
Freshman
Jimmy Casey (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) capped a three-run fourth inning with an RBI single that gave Stockton a 3-1 lead. After Union tied the game 3-3, a sacrifice fly by
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) and an RBI double by
Joe Gmitter (Hamilton Steinert) put the Ospreys in front 5-3.
Union jumped ahead 6-5 in the fifth inning, but Schwinn singled home Halvorsen in the sixth frame to tie the game again at 6-6. After three-and-a-half scoreless innings, the game went to the 10th, where Union edged the Ospreys 7-6 on a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Stockton will head to Florida for seven games during spring break, starting with a matchup against Juniata College on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
