Scott Baker is in his fifth year as the head baseball coach at Stockton and 19th season as a college head coach. His 2018 season was highlighted by a 3-2 upset of Rowan University while the Profs were ranked #1 in the nation by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Baker reached a milestone with his 200th career win in a 3-2 triumph over Swarthmore on March 25, 2017. The Ospreys finished with 15 wins during the campaign.Â
Baker steered a 2016 team with a revamped lineup to 10 wins, including seven in the difficult NJAC. The season was highlighted by a doubleheader sweep of Ramapo, which was ranked #1 in the nation by D3baseball.com at the time.
Baker was hired in July 2014 to take the helm of the Osprey program. In his first year on the Stockton bench, he led the Ospreys to a 16-16 record and an ECAC tournament berth. The season featured a six-game winning streak in March and victories over two ranked opponents (#28 Rowan, #5 Kean) plus a Ramapo squad that reached the College World Series.
A native of nearby Linwood, New Jersey, Baker returned to the Garden State after a lengthy career at two schools in the South. He spent 14 seasons as the head coach at Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee. Prior to his arrival at Sewanee, Baker served on the coaching staff at Georgia Southern University for 15 years.
Baker holds the school record for victories at Sewanee with 166 in his 14-year tenure. He became the winningest coach in school history with a 16-4 triumph over Hamilton College on March 20, 2009 and continued adding to his total for the next five-plus years. Under Baker’s direction, the Tigers set school records for win, conference wins and conference finish. His players at Sewanee earned 36 all-conference honors and five all-region selections.
Before assuming the head role at Sewanee, Baker was an assistant coach at Georgia Southern for 10 years (1984-94) and associate head coach for five years (1994-99). During that 15-year span, he helped the Eagles to 521 wins, seven conference championships and one appearance in the College World Series. Baker worked under Georgia Southern head coach Jack Stallings, an American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Famer who was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA Division I history with 1,255 career wins.
Baker’s background also includes one season as an assistant at Salisbury University and two years as head freshman and varsity assistant coach at his alma mater, Mainland Regional High School. In addition, he coached for two summers in the Shenandoah Valley Collegiate Baseball League (VA) in 1987-88.
Baker played on the college level for two years apiece at Atlantic Cape Community College and Salisbury State University. After obtaining his associate’s degree from ACCC, Baker later earned his bachelor’s degree from Salisbury State and added a master’s degree from Georgia Southern.
